Friday Fave: Salads

I am a gal who likes her meat. However, today I want to share my favorite salads in Louisville! Most people don’t dream about salads, but these three salads from Maira, Sidebar, and Merle’s are so dream-worthy and are at the top of my salad list!

Maira’s Greek Salad with Chicken

Maira’s Greek Salad with Chicken

Maira Mediterranean Grill — Greek Salad with Chicken

Y’all… Maira is relatively new to the scene (although the owner is not) but this salad has changed my life. (Thanks to my friend Niki for the hot tip on how awesome this is.) Thankfully Maira is very close to my office, as I crave it regularly. I plan when I will allow myself to go out to get it. I anxiously run in to get it (usually carryout). I honestly don’t even know what all of the things are in this salad, and I really don’t care. If you do care, the greens are tossed in Greek dressing. It has pickled vegetables—I swear they’re amazing—along with dill pickles, olives (which I always pick out), feta cheese… plus a side of pita, hummus (perfect hummus), and garlic dip (so good). I add the chicken, which is chicken shawarma, and it is perfectly grilled and accents all of the other flavors flawlessly. The service is quick and so friendly; I love going in here. Maira is located at 1907-C S 4th St, Louisville, KY 40208 (aka “over by Gray’s”), and you can read more reviews on Maira's Yelp page.

Sidebar’s Chopped Kale Salad

Sidebar’s Chopped Kale Salad

Sidebar at Whiskey Row — Chopped Kale Salad

Sidebar, located beside the Second Street Bridge and KFC Yum! Center, is a burger and whiskey restaurant, but the chopped kale salad absolutely steals the show here! Sidebar’s menu describes this gem as "kale, toasted almonds, cherries, parmesan cheese, and citrus vinaigrette"! (That is some kale, and it is massaged so perfectly.) It is available in a small and a large size, and you can add grilled chicken, a quinoa black bean patty, grilled salmon, medium-rare ahi tuna, or a certified angus beef hamburger. My mouth is just watering thinking about this one. It doesn’t need a protein added for flavor, but there are great options if you wish. (Note: I am also obsessed with the beer cheese and pretzels here.) Sidebar is located at 129 N 2nd St, Louisville, KY 40202 , and you can read more reviews on Sidebar’s Yelp page.

Merle’s KY Kale Salad (half sized version)

Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen — KY Kale Salad

Okay, just massage me up a kale salad any day of the week. Merle’s menu describes this salad as including “currants, toasted almonds, parmesan, [and] citrus vinaigrette“. Now, I’m not even sure what a currant is, but the flavor sure goes well with the others! The KY Kale Salad at Merle’s is another salad I regularly crave (along with the garlic parmesan fries), and they offer full salad and half salad options. This spot also often has live music, so you can sip your Front Porch Lemonade while eating this fantastic salad and listening to some live tunes. Merle’s is located at 122 W Main St, Louisville, KY 40202, and you can read more reviews on Merle’s Yelp page.

***Now that I’ve shared my three favorites (and I’m a little shocked in realizing none of them have bacon), I need you to tell me about your favorite salads in the comments! Local, homemade, or otherwise!***
